7 Take the Orthodox Cancer Treatment: Along with complementary extras

This article, along with others on this site, aims not to tell you what to do regarding your cancer diagnosis but rather to provide helpful facts in order to better help you decide how to treat your illness. Treatment is one area where facts are so important. You, as the patient, need as much information as possible in order to choose which treatment to accept. Some people choose a combination of orthodox and alternative treatments. They claim that the two work together to increase their chances of beating the disease.

The three most common forms of orthodox treatment are surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. It’s possible for a patient to have one or more than one of these orthodox treatments. In the other treatment camp, we can discuss alternative and complementary treatments although more and more the distinction between these two is becoming blurred. In this article any treatment which is not described as orthodox is referred to as alternative with every alternative here being considered complementary to the orthodox treatment received.

There are many forms of alternative treatments including diet, acupuncture, Tai Chi, acupuncture, meditation and natural health supplements.

As an informed adult, it is your decision as to which treatments you receive. Of course listening to your oncologist and other medical professionals is important, but having asked as many relevant questions as you can, you then elect to have whatever treatments you choose. Obviously inform your doctor if you choose to take an alternative treatment or treatments. It’s important to keep everyone in the loop from both sides of the treatment program. Understand too that the medical staff providing orthodox treatment will not be responsible for your alternative treatment.

Why combine the two types of treatment? Well some argue because you can. Both forms of treatment are available, are legal and freely available so why not use as many resources as possible in your cancer battle? There are many who believe healing by natural therapies is a proven way of fighting cancer. They argue that healing from within is true healing and has worked for many people. There may well be psychological benefits. Tackling your health on different fronts can give your confidence and self-belief a boost. Everything counts in the war on cancer.

Some alternative treatments can assist not so much in defeating the disease but in reducing the strain and suffering of side effects from orthodox treatments. If chemotherapy is causing you to have digestive trouble, drinking green tea may help relieve the symptoms of an upset stomach. In this case an alternative treatment can indeed be complementary to an orthodox treatment.

It is true that some misguided people have recommended alternative treatments which apparently have no benefits at all and in fact give cancer sufferers false hope. But there have also been people who have pushed a theory which was once ridiculed but has since become widely accepted. It is wise to examine all claims thoroughly and to give yourself every chance to attack cancer on as many fronts as possible. Your diet, meditation and vitamin supplements may be the perfect support act for your orthodox treatment.
