Irresponsible journalism. If you had four brain MRI’s every year for 25 years your risk factor would only increase by 5%.

    Behold the ignorance of journalism!

I wish, somehow, we didn’t have quite as much "free speech" in the media as we do, for it certainly does more net harm than net good, especially when some spotty youth with a journalism degree tries to write something "intelligent" about science; even if YOU flunked out of High School, you OUGHT to know that "electromagnetic radiation" is EVERYWHERE, and without it you would surely die…and the irresponsible party responsible for this stupid article should know that!

Think about this logically; if I could PROVE to you (which I can) that more than a dozen innocent people die HORRIBLY every year from a fatal injury caused by a seat-belt, would you support a ban on the use of seat-belts?

People (typically) do not have MRI’s for "fun", they have them because something is awry inside them, and an MRI is a lower-risk procedure than exploratory surgery…

Not if done in moderation. I have 2 done a year to keep a check on my brain cancer and it has not grown at all.

People! They do these tests on rats or mice or monkeys or whatever else they can get to sit still long enough to do these tests. If you were given a MASSIVE dose at the same rate equivalent to your weight size then you MIGHT get brain tumors. Might.

But with all the good that the MRI’s have done for me (even though I’m claustrophobic), I think I will still take my chances.

    1) "electromagnetic radiation is now thought to cause cancer"
IONIZING electromagnetic radiation (X-rays, gamma rays etc) has been known for ever to cause cancer. It’s ionizing – it breaks chemical bonds.

    2) NON-IONIZING radiation – eg radio waves, cell phone signals, MRIs – do not break bonds. There is no theoretical reason why they should cause cancer at the doses that people typically experience. At very high doses they can overheat tissues and can cause damage that way.

There have been decades of research (much of it not good) on the effects of non-thermal levels of non-ionizing radiation: cellular studies, animal studies, epidemiological studies. Much of it driven by peoples’ fears about exposure to cell phone signals.

Take home (IMHO) is that there is no credible evidence for any harm caused by the levels that people are exposed to.

Some 15 years ago I searched the literature for evidence of harm from MRI exposure – it was part of my duty as a member of our safety committee. I could find no evidence of any diseases caused by MRI exposure.
