Can x-ray technicians get cancer due to the radiation they are exposed to?
->
Hello everyone! Im interested in becoming a x-ray technician. However, my co-worker told me that x-ray techs live a shorter life because they are exposed to radiation on a daily basis. From my understanding, x-ray techs wear a patch which detects how much of radiation they may be exposed to.Im very enthusiastic about becoming an x-ray tech,however, I don’t want to live a short life.LOL! Please give me soon prompt feed back.

yes, we can get cancer just like anyone else. however, recent studies indicate that x-ray technologists live a little longer than the general population. x-ray techs are ( should be ) very careful to limit their exposure to harmful ionizing radiation. we do this by the priciple of TDS (time, distance, shielding). we expose ourselves for as liittle time as possible. we stand as far away from the source of radiation as possible. and we shield ourselves whenever possible.
to offer a little perspective on the distance part of the principle, if the tech stands 6 feet from the patient with no shielding protecting
the tech would receive 1/1000 the dose of radiation the patient received.
I would be more concerned about being able to find a job in a market that is flooded with x-ray techs after i spent 2 years in a fairly difficult educational program. at any rate, good luck.
Your coworker told you a big, fat lie. When you’re getting xrays or radiation, the tech leaves the room. Even when you go to the dentist, when they xray your teeth, they leave the room and stand behind a lead wall like xray and radiation techs.
Everyone who has ever X-rayed me wore a lead apron or stood behind a panel in the room, or went into another room. You do have the chance to be exposed to more x-rays but I haven’t heard of this as a major health problem.
What you have to make sure of is that you get proper training. Get certified by one of the organizations for your field. And, understand the equipment you will be using, how to detect problems, and how to know that it is actually being maintained property.

Your co-worker does not know what they are talking about. Don’t seek advice from people who are uninformed.
Radiology technicians, as x-ray technicians are now called, follow strict protocols to protect themselves from exposure to the radiation sources that are part of their work environment. This includes standing behind a radiation-proof metal door when radiation-delivering equipment is in use and wearing protective clothing as appropriate.
So long as you follow the safety protocols then you will not have any health issues as a result of being a radiology technician. It is just like any other occupation with potentially hazardous conditions, such as an electrician or welder, you just need to follow safety rules.
Your friend is an idiot.
Don’t you reckon you would have heard about the lawsuits if all the xray techs were dropping like flies due to their job?
They don’t get exposed to huge amounts of radiation anyway. They stand behind screens or wear lead aprons during exposure times.
it is not actually proven and as long as you follow the protective measures there is no problem ,actually the amount of radiation of x-ray is very little read more about that here http://lungcancerdestroyer.blogspot.com/
