Can you answer some questions I have about PAP smears and a couple about birth control?

1. If youre going into the doctor’s to get birth control, do you have to get a PAP smear before you get it?

2. If you go to a free clinic to get birth control, do they give you a PAP smear?

3. If you make and appointment with your doctor to get birth control, and you unconveniently get you period around that time, will they still give you a PAP smear?

4. My friend told me they use something that looks like a long Q-Tip to do a PAP smear. How far up do they "stick it in"?

5. What does a PAP smear test for? (Besides cervical cancer caused by the HPV virus)

6. How can a man get the HPV virus? Is it just by sleeping around, or can a virgin get it from other things?
If they can only get it from sleeping around, then is it still necassary to get a PAP smear if you and your boyfriend are both virgins when you become sexual active and no ones lying about it?

I’m kind of nervous about PAP smears.
Please, if youre going to answer, answer what I asked. Thank you!

First of all, it’s up to the doctor whether they want to give you a pap smear before they give you birth control. If you aren’t currently sexually active, they may not require it. The thing is, it’s something a responsible, sexually active woman does, so if you’re planning on becoming sexually active, you should just go ahead and do it. They can do a pap smear when you have your period, but it can make the results difficult to read. When they actually do the pap smear, they swab your cervix to collect cells so they can check for abnormal ones, the early signs of cervical cancer. A guy gets HPV from being sexually active, but it doesn’t require intercourse. It can be spread through skin to skin contact without penetration during sexual activity. There is nothing to be nervous about with a pap smear, and it’s something you should do once you’re sexually active. It’s not a thrilling experience, but it’s quick and you only have to do it once a year. Don’t avoid going to the doctor to get birth control to avoid a pap smear. A quick swab is a lot less scary than getting pregnant!

    1. If youre going into the doctor’s to get birth control, do you have to get a PAP smear before you get it?
***Yes, unless you have a current one on file.***

    2. If you go to a free clinic to get birth control, do they give you a PAP smear?
*** Yes, altho it may or may not be free***

    3. If you make and appointment with your doctor to get birth control, and you unconveniently get you period around that time, will they still give you a PAP smear?
*** I seem to recall my provider having a sign that requested women to please reschedule if they were on their period, just keep track of when you normally get your period, and go at a "safe" time :) ***

    4. My friend told me they use something that looks like a long Q-Tip to do a PAP smear. How far up do they "stick it in"?
*** Yes, they stick it usually all the way in, but don’t worry- it doesn’t hurt***

    5. What does a PAP smear test for? (Besides cervical cancer caused by the HPV virus)
***It tests for abnormal cells, which could mean HPV cells***

    6. How can a man get the HPV virus? Is it just by sleeping around, or can a virgin get it from other things?
***The types of HPV that infect the genital area are spread primarily through genital contact. Most HPV infections have no signs or symptoms; therefore, most infected persons are unaware they are infected, yet they can transmit the virus to a sex partner***
If they can only get it from sleeping around, then is it still necassary to get a PAP smear if you and your boyfriend are both virgins when you become sexual active and no ones lying about it?
***Yes, go ahead and get the test. You need it to get birthcontrol***
