Estrogen regulates the growth of the mammary glands, and it function is mediated by receptors that allow certain to absorb estrogen. The relationship between steroid hormones and postmenopausal women has been assessed in at least fourteen studies over the last twenty years, and most of them have provided strong evidence between estrogen and cancer. This link is harder to assess in premenopausal women because of the fluctuating levels of estrogen in their system because they are still having periods. Further medical research is now investigating the role of insulin resistance on estrogen.

DIM and Estrogen dominance
Diindolyimethane does not actually reduce the amount of estrogen in out bodies but it does change the way our bodies’ method of expelling estrogen. It creates less bad 16-hyroxy metabolites and more good estrogen 2-hydroxy metabolites, which in itself helps to regulate estrogen dominance.

As the level of obesity has risen exponentially in the Western World so has the incidence of insulin resistance and type two diabetes. There appears to be a link between obesity and post menopausal women and breast cancer, but that link is hard to prove as the risk factors for both are similar, a sedentary lifestyle, a high intake of refined carbohydrates such as white sugar, white bread and white pasta and a high level of fats and obesity.

For many years women were told that Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) offered as Estrogen Therapy (ET) or a combination of Estrogen and Progesterone (Hormone Therapy or HT) was the easy way to avoid any symptoms of the menopause. Women were given either natural or synthetic hormones to reduce hot flashes, headaches, moodiness, insomnia, and vaginal dryness.

The protective effects in one’s diet of particular fruits and vegetables that offers against cancer may intuitively seem to apply more to cancers that are related to the gastrointestinal tract, such as colon cancer, stomach cancer or intestinal cancer. On the other hand, for certain cancers, like those of the ovaries, prostate and breasts, one may be more inclined to believe that hormones play a bigger part.
