Radiation destroys all cells by damaging the DNA in them. In radiotherapy the radiation is used to destroy cancerous cells in the tumor, which would eventually grow and kill the person.

Radiation prevents cells from replicating. Since cancer cells typically replicate at a faster pace, it affects them directly. Most cells in our body do no replicate past the growing stage. There are some that do – skin, cells in outer layer of stomach and bone cells. It affects these cells too, hence, people loose their hair, have digestive problems and skeletal issues when on radiation therapy.

Radiation is used to try to destroy the cancerous cells. When someone is getting a bone marrow transplant they have to use radiation to destroy all of the cancerous cells first.
