I fell asleep on top of a cheap dvd player, while it was on. Could the radiation give me cancer?

I have a cheap plastic dvd player, bought at Tescos, a supermarket. Last night I fell asleep watching a film in bed. When I woke up I found I had rolled over on top of the Dvd player but it was still playing. I was asleep for several hours (heavy sleeper) is there any risk I could get cancer from this?

Your dvd reads the disk using a laser. It’s very directional, and while you could hurt your eyes by looking directly at it, the energy from the laser cannot penetrate the case – otherwise you would see it.

The only other thing it will give out is a small magnetic field, present in any electrically powered circuit. This would probably be far smaller than the one generated by your house wiring and the planet.

In short, no – there’s no significant radiation output from a DVD player, running or not.
