I'm pretty sure you need to study medicine first.

After that, you can do a doctorate and already be researching to help cure cancer.

There are so many cancers and areas to investigate that any one person works on a very small part of finding the cure.

Probably the sub-fields of medicine/science are things like cellular microbiology, biochemistry, biomedical science etc.

No specific profession. Some researchers have PhD degrees in biology, or molecular biology, some have MS degrees, some even have BS degrees. Some have MD AND PhD degrees. Normally the degree, at whatever level, will be in one of the life sciences: biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, etc.

Research is done at universities and at private companies such as drug companies.

You can find the email addresses of doctors and professors at major universities in their MD programs. I'm sure one will be happy to provide some information about educational background and the kind of work they do.
