Post chemo throat cancer patients!….?

I need some help. My father’s last chemo was Dec.28, 2007. His tumor is located near the base of his tongue. His last checkup since the end of chemo was good, but he still is not eating. He says everything tastes bitter and metallic, and solid food still makes him gag his socks up. He has not eaten in several months and has dropped about 70 pounds. Did anyone else experience this with throat cancer, and when did your taste come back? His doctors know he still is not eating, and tell him to keep drinking his Glucerna and Ensure drinks. I do not think this is normal. Thanks for your help!

Hi, i did not have throat cancer, however i did have stomach cancer, and had a complete gasterectomy. I suggest your father look into a post gasterectomy diet as they are designed to reduce weight loss. Talk to your doctor and check out http://www.positivecancer.com I think some of the stuff there will help. Also as a side note if ensures aren’t tasteing good for him, try gatorade, or coke, and consider exercise.

Your dad may benefit from seeing a speech pathologist who specializes in swallowing disorders and has had head/neck cancer experience.
Ask his ENT for a referral.
