What can I do for my cockatiel that was just diagnosed with cancer?
->
Raki is 22 years old & has been diagnosed with fibrosarcoma. He has some tumors on his wing which he has picked until they bleed. He’s wearing a collar now(which he hates) to clear up the wounds. A wing amputation is the only cure, but the vet doubts he can live through surgery because of his age. Other than picking at his wing, he is a very happy bird. He eats, plays & sings a lot. He’s been my little companion for so many years, that I’m heartbroken!

To be honest with you I would let him live out his life until the cancer takes it course. Surgery is very difficult for any birds let along very sick ones. I would let him enjoy time left and you enjoy him. If he seems happy all except picking at tumors then let him be. When the wounds clear up let him live quality life not quanity. If the tumors get worse and he bleeds stop bleeding. Make sure he is not in pain and suffering when you see that he is then put the little Raki to sleep one last time. I know your heartbroken I have been there. I say if he is eating, playing, singing then leave well enough alone. The surgery is so risky and he many die then and there, also a bird with no wings that may be stressful enough to kill him. People live years with cancer so who knows. Just go by day and make each day with him count to the fullest. And when he passes celebrate his life and go online and read the Rainbow Bridge poem. So sorry you and your little companion are going through this but thank goodness he has a loving wonderful person to care for him like yourself.
Talk it over with the vet maybe put down.Better for him.
the animal is suffering, you need to act like the higher order animal that you are and take its fate into your own hands.
if it was my bird i would risk the op, if there was an op to cure it, if not i would put it out of its misery…
if you take on responsibility for a lower life form you must deal with the tough stuff as well as the cute stuff im afraid…
fix it or kill it, dont leave it as it is =(
Oh honey, I am so very sorry for you. Pray, miracles happen. I will too.
As horrible as it may sound, it might be time to put you little friend to sleep. Birds do very poorly under anesthesia, and, even if he made it, what then? He would be a one-winged, poor old bird. If he’s picking at his lumps now, what do you think he’ll do to the surgery site? Wearing a collar is obviously making him miserable, and the cancer is causing him pain.
He’s lived a long, good life with you, and you’ve obviously loved and cared for him. I think it’s time to let him go. He’s suffering, and in my experience, sometimes the worst thing a pet can have is an owner that cares too much to let them pass.
I’m sorry about you’re little one. I know he must mean a lot to you.
what a poor thing, i’d let the vet do the wing surgery i know its hard but he might live through is.
good look and i Hope this helps!
Poor thing! I would put IP6 with Inositol powder
(Enzymatic Therapy) in his water. Powerful cancer fighter. I use it
too. And Vit C. I am a survivor using alternative med. See
free pdf book on my website. God bless! Sue
