What does radiation do for cancer patients?

We found out today that my grandmother has cancer and my mother said that the oncologist is planning on using radiation to ease her pain. My question is, what does radiation do? I know, eases pain, but how?
She has lung cancer which has spread to her bones (her back, more specifically).

"Radiation, which is also used to treat cancer, can be very helpful in alleviating cancer pain in some circumstances. It can be used to reduce the size of some tumors which, in turn, takes pressure off organs and nerves that the tumor touches. It can also be used to treat the pain of cancer that has spread to the bones, the brain, blood vessels, nerves and spine.

Treatment with radiation is done by specialists called radiation oncologists, who will determine the dosage of radiation needed and oversee the treatment itself. In some instances, radiation is performed by implantation, when radioactive material is placed inside the body for a period of time, during which it kills cancer cells. "

Radiation kills the targeted cancerous cells.

Cancer cells are like any other cells except they’re well, cancerous, and can cause other cells to become cancerous. Radiation treatments kill cancer cells. However, radiation kills some good cells too, which is why some radiation patients lose hair, etc. But in the long run, radiation will get rid of the cancer and hopefully ease some of her pain.

Radiation therapy does not ease pain, it treats the cancer.(radiation therapy can in its self be painful) It kills the cancer cells but at the same time kills good cells too. Its hard on the patient but necessary to get rid of the cancer. The doctor will give other meds to treat the pain.

Radiation doesn’t ease the pain. It does help stop the cancer cells from multiplying. Radiation can cause skin burns, like a deep sunburn, which can hurt and you skin can blister and peel.

Please do not do radiation. Read these cancer testimonials on this link and consider the alternative. glycoresource.com

I manage a cancer center. A few comments. Radiation offers excellent pain relief. With current technologies there will be no sunburns or skin reactions. The radiation damages all cells that it hits. The cancerous cells lack the ability to repair themselves whereas the non-cancerous ones can. I have treated cancer patients for over 15 years and believe it is an excellent modality and should definitely be a treatment choice.
