Or you could become a Nurse Practitioner specializing in Oncology, who would assist a physician treat cancer at a high level. But you don't necessarily need an M.D. to do cancer research. You could major one of the biological sciences in your undergrad years, and then get a PhD and specialize in one of the applied biological sciences, e.g. biochemistry, cellular anatomy, oncology, etc. as they are applied to the research and treatment of cancer and work as part of a cancer research team. Your research will, hopefully, result in pharmacological and other types of treatments and preventative measures.
