When the USA 5 year cancer death rate is higher than socialized medicine, how is that lying?

One poster asked a question about why republicans are distorting the truth about socialized medicine. Here is one fact – Cancer rates in the USA are much higher than in the rest of the world.

Everyone has access to the same drugs and same medical procedures. The question to ask is – why is there a difference between the USA and the rest of the world on cancer survival

According to the U.K.’s Office of National Statistics, the five-year relative survival rate for patients diagnosed with prostate cancer between 1993 and 1995 (and thus followed up to 1998 or 2000) was 59.8 percent, The National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results database puts concurrent U.S. rates at 95.4 percent. As with the more recent figures, there is indeed a significant difference,

The USA and Japan have highest cancer survival rates

Averages are based on percentage of population and by different grading standards. It’s the same as calling us the biggest polluter when actually China and India are but, because their population is higher, they show less "carbon usage" per person! They same "research" probably puts us low in infant mortality rates also because, once again, we grade differently. But if you use as a source someone’s "evidence" who advocates for socialized medicine, I think it may come up a bit BIASED, don’t you?

Your Cristal ball needs a tune up, If we get national health care hopefully there will be mental care for displaced workers with psychiatric issues like you that are in desperate need of help.

In socialized medicine, you are put on a list for a very long time to get anything done. I know for a fact that many many Canadians when they get sick come down from Canada to America for treatment because they don’t have to wait 2 years just to get a cat scan.

Yeah you might not have to pay but you cant argue that you get results faster when you do.

"The highest survival rates were found in the U.S. for breast and prostate cancer, in Japan for colon and rectal cancers in men, and in France for colon and rectal cancers in women, Coleman’s team reports.

In Canada and Australia, survival was also high for most cancers.

The lowest cancer survival rates for all four cancers were found in Algeria."

The Canucks, Aussies, Japanese and French all have "socialized medicine"

This isn’t a good argument for or against single-payer care.

Doo Dah…Doo Dah welcome to my little world of misinformation. Just like 50 million uninsured and they do not tell that figure includes all the illegals the liberals want to cover under FREE health care.

Because you are only including ONE type of cancer. In ALL cancers, the US ranks 9th place, behind many other ’socialized medicine’ nations:

    # 9 United States: 321.9 deaths per 100,000 peopl
    # 10 Australia: 298.9 deaths per 100,000 peopl
    # 11 Norway: 289.4 deaths per 100,000 peopl
    # 12 France: 286.1 deaths per 100,000 peopl
    # 13 Austria: 280 deaths per 100,000 peopl
    # 14 Sweden: 268.2 deaths per 100,000 peopl
    # 15 Finland: 255.4 deaths per 100,000 peopl
    # 16 United Kingdom: 253.5 deaths per 100,000 peopl

You are missing the point. Liberals don’t care whether anybody lives or dies or gets health care. All they care about is trashing those "evil insurance companies" that make a profit. Results are irrelevant to them. They would rather have people die in a non-profit (single payer) system than see people live and allow stockholders to get a dividend.
    Pretty sick isn’t it?

    from your own first source

"The highest survival rates were found in the U.S. for breast and prostate cancer, in Japan for colon and rectal cancers in men, and in France for colon and rectal cancers in women, Coleman’s team reports.

In Canada and Australia, survival was also high for most cancers."

take note of France and Canada in that quote, both have government provided heath plans.

and your other source also counts Australia in that top 80% WITH the USA.. and guess what their heathcare system is like.. go ahead… look it up..

and Phil.. Excellent info.. I didn’t know Japans healthplan, so I didn’t mention it.

I think you misstated the headline question to mean the opposite of what you were asking; but hooray, that’s great news- more people are surviving!

The problem isn’t the quality of our doctors in this country, the problem is that not everyone can go see one. That 95% survival rate might be 99% if folks weren’t afraid of the cost of early detection. Why settle for pretty good, when we could be great?

Unfortunately, Prostate Cancer can be a tricky example, because it strikes so late in life. Many men who come down with prostate cancer actually die of other natural causes like heart disease or strokes before the cancer has any noticeable symptoms.

  10. Lemanski's Ghost on December 14, 2009 2:23 am

So you’re generalizing all health care outcomes based on differences in prostate cancer?

  11. kcbf on December 14, 2009 2:23 am

The reason our cancer death rates are higher than other countries is because we have more cancer period!

Tobacco use, drug/alcohol abuse, and obesity all increase the likelihood of a person developing cancer and all three of those are vastly present in America.

If you want to lower the amount of deaths from cancer, UHC isn’t the answer. The answer is that people start living healthier lives overall so we dont need all of the expensive doctor care.
