Why are people who are diagnosed with cancer told to avoid acids in their food?
->
People who are diagnosed with cancer are often encouraged to go on diets that contain primarly bases and are told to avoid acids. I was wondering why? and are there any sites with examples of cancer diets?
With your answer, please try to include a site that further expalins why. I need this info for a project.

Hmm, I think it might have something to do with the medicine. Certain chemicals compounds cancel out the effect of the medicine. A lot of cancer patients are told to avoid folic acid because it interferes with the absorption of the medicine. Same with orange juice, and sometimes milk.
Grapefruit juice interferes with a lot of different medicines.
I suspect you’re referring to the quacks who push alkaline diets to prevent/cure cancer.
It’s hogwash.
No reputable medical authority endorses this nonsense about avoiding acidic foods. Check any major health web site: Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins Hospital, MD Anderson, WebMD, Sloan Kettering, etc. It’s utter nonsense.

Alkalinity in the body will destroy cancer, therefore increasing acidity in the body actually speed up cancer, although I had heard something beneficial by increasing aicidity, can remember what it was, but I think too much acid is actually good for fighting cancer also, so either very alkaline, or very acidic is good in treating cancer. Dont take my advice though, research it yourself, you can find lots of information, take in everything you read, then determine what you think the best treatment would be. People will tell you left and right that certain treatments are "hogwash" and what not, but dont let them sway you from discovering the truth, most of them are only repeating what their doctors have told them, and have never bothered to question anything.
Personally… during treatment high acid foods tore my stomach apart. The treatment damages the stomach and digestive tract atleast temporarily. Eating food high in acid, spicy hot, and a few other things that just dont agree well with me in the first place made my life miserable for hours. My stomach would hurt, I would be dizzy and nauseated. I would be puking to the point I had nothing on my stomach and dry heaving is 100 times worse than puking. It was AWFUL.
I am working on a website with my own personal story, but I somehow doubt that will count as a reference on your homework.
To avoid heartburn?
Who told you that people diagnosed with cancer are told to avoid acids in there food? Not true, unless your info is coming from a Kevin Trudeau infomercial.
The best cancer diet is a balanced diet of whatever you like to eat along with lots of fresh vegetables and fruits. Low fat and no fried food is best but the important thing is to maintain your normal weight and to not eat some weird diet while trying to change your body’s acid/alkaline balance – which is totally impossible without really risking your heart and your health.

Most forms of chemotherapy act on fast dividing cells like cancer cells, but also like hair follicles and the mucous membranes that line your digestive tract. Acid foods can hurt the tender digestive tract and even lead to mouth sores – decidedly unpleasant.
I wasn’t given any restrictions on what I ate when going through chemo. But I did find that the first few days after a treatment high acid and spicy foods did not sit well in my stomach. Nothing else really upset my stomach.
My husband has throat cancer and the oncologist told him that acidic foods will hurt his throat severly after his radiation burns the back of his throat. That is if he can eat at all. He hasn’t started treatment yet.
They aren’t. I wasn’t told to avoid acids and nor was any cancer patient I know.
Anyone who tells you this is completely ignorant about nutrition – nothing you eat or drink can change the acidity of anything in your body except your urine. The idea that high alkaline diets can prevent cancer, cure cancer or affect the progress of cancer in any way is rubbish.
If you haven’t yet read the excellent article a couple of other answerers have referred you to, here it is again:

EDIT: Liz S, that’s quite some little cure-all you have there; as well as cancer, you’re recommending it elsewhere for high blood pressure, reflux, chronic pain, arthritis, stroke treatment and prevention, stress, autoimmune disease…
I’m guessing the initial S in your ID stands for Spears. And you’re spamming.
